Trap Mines can be found in Capitol Hill during Seattle Day 1. Climb on top of the dumpster next to the motel and enter the apartment. Investigate the bed to find the Trap Mine.

Lure Enemies to a trap

By making noise near the Trap Mine with bricks or empty bottles, enemies will be attracted to the location and the mine will automatically explode. This is especially useful against infected, as they will all head towards the source of the noise, allowing you to take down multiple enemies at once.

Place them along Enemy Patrol Routes

Both infected and human enemies follow specific patrol routes. By setting up Trap Mines along these paths, they will automatically explode when the enemies approach. This allows you to reduce the number of enemies without alerting them to your presence.
