Resident Evil 4: How to Parry Attacks
- Last updated on
This article provides a guide for Parrying in Resident Evil 4 Remake! Learn the tips and strategies to parry successfully!
Tips for Successful Parrying
Time it with the button display in the bottom right corner of the screen
Before button display | During button display |
---|---|
To perform a parry, it is recommended to time it by looking at the Knife icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. While the button is displayed on the left side of the Knife icon, pressing the stance button once will result in a successful parry.
Memorize enemy attack patterns
In RE4 remake, enemy attack patterns vary depending on the type of enemy and the weapon they possess. By memorizing the attack patterns of each enemy, you can grasp the timing and increase the success rate of parrying.
Mash the button when it becomes troublesome to parry
If you can't perform a consistent parry, continuously mashing the stance button can be helpful. Although it may make it difficult to follow up with melee attacks, it allows you to block the enemy's attacks even if the timing is slightly off.

Types of Parry
Perfect Timing [Leads to melee attacks]
If you parry at the perfect timing right before the enemy's attack hits, Leon's recovery time after parrying will be reduced. This allows you to perform melee attacks towards the vulnerable enemy. Melee attacks do not consume Ammo and can deal significant damage to a wide range of enemies, so make good use of parrying and melee attacks to efficiently handle enemies in a group.
Normal Parry [Takes time to counterattack]
If your timing is off, it will result in a normal parry. This increases Leon's recovery time after parrying. While you can deflect the enemy's attack, it becomes more difficult to follow up with a melee attack compared to a perfectly timed parry.
How to Parry
Prepare the Knife in response to the enemy's attack
Parrying is an action that can be performed when the Knife's durability is not depleted. If the button icon appears just before the enemy's attack hits, parrying will be successful if you prepare the Knife in time.
Parry guide may appear in the center of the screen
In addition to the icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, there are also moments when the parry icon appears in the center of the screen. There is a high possibility that the parry icon will appear for attacks that are extremely powerful and can cause instant death, so be sure to pay attention to the screen and not overlook it.

You can also parry long-range attacks using the same technique
In addition to close-range attacks, you can also parry long-range attacks using the same technique. If the enemy throws axes or weapons at you, don't flinch and carefully observe their attack motion to parry. However, whether you can parry shooting weapons like crossbows is currently under investigation.
Points to Note for Parrying
Consumes Knife Durability
Before Parrying | After Parrying Multiple Times |
---|---|
The amount consumed may vary depending on the type of attack
When you perform a parry, the durability of your Knife will be consumed. The Knife can also be used for purposes other than parrying, such as escaping from grab attacks or dealing the finishing blow to an enemy. Therefore, make sure to check the durability of your Knife before performing a parry to prevent it from being destroyed.
Knife Cannot Be Repaired in the Demo Version
In the demo version, there is no Merchant who can repair your Knife. If your Knife gets damaged, it will put you at a disadvantage with no way to recover, so be careful not to reduce its durability to 0 while progressing through the game.

Grab Attacks Cannot Be Parried
Grab attacks, where enemies try to grab you, cannot be parried. These attacks are mainly used by unarmed enemies, so try to evade them by moving to the side or stepping back after observing their approaching movements.
Cannot Parry While Holding the Knife
If you are holding the Knife, you will fail to parry and will be directly hit by the enemy's attack. It is recommended to not hold the Knife and move around unless you are attacking or aiming to parry.
Recommended Parry Practice Methods
Repeat practice near save points
Utilize auto-save in the demo version |
---|
Since the demo version does not have a save function, it is recommended to practice near auto-save points. After practicing thoroughly, intentionally get a game over to restore the durability of the Knife. |
If you want to practice parrying, repeat practice with the villagers near the first save point in Chapter 1. In the early stages, the enemy's attack power is low and their attack movements are easy to anticipate, making it perfect for mastering the technique of parrying.
