Leon can extend his HP to the maximum level indicated at the bottom right corner of the screen. Having more HP reduces the risk of failure, so it's advisable to collect Yellow Herbs as you progress through the game.
Your Maximum HP Carries Over to the Second Playthrough
Your maximum HP will carry over when you start a second playthrough. The Yellow Herbs you collected during your first playthrough can also be collected again in the second one, so there's no need to max out your HP in the first run.

Yellow Herbs can be found at fixed locations on the map. They are not randomly dropped, so make sure you don't miss them.
Trade with the Merchant Using Spinel
You can trade 3 Spinels with the Merchant to get a Yellow Herb. However, this trade can only be done once, and it won't be sufficient to maximize your HP.
