Monster that Appears in the CORE in Normal Mode
Whimsalot is a monster that appears in the Core in Normal Mode. Regardless of the route, you will encounter it in battle. If you are aiming for the Pacifist route, you need to spare it. If you are aiming for the Genocide route, you must defeat it.

Appears in Ruins in Hard Mode
In hard mode, Whimsalot appears in the Ruins. It attacks similarly to Whimsun, which appears in the Ruins in Normal Mode. In Hard Mode, there are no route branches, and the game ends after the Toriel battle in the Ruins. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you defeat and spare Whimsalot.

Avoid Moving the SOUL Too Much

Whimsalot attacks by shooting bugs in specific directions or in a circular pattern. To avoid taking damage, try to move as little as possible while being mindful of other monster's attacks.
How to Spare Whimsalot
Pray then Touch the Green Bug
To spare Whimsalot, start by selecting the Pray action. Then, a Green Bug will appear when Whimsalot attacks. Touching the Green Bug will restore your HP and allow you to spare Whimsalot on the next turn.
