Character Terminology Explanation
Armor
The yellow memory of HP is called armor. Armor reduces the damage taken by 30%, so tanks with armor have more effective HP than their actual HP value.
Shield
The light blue memory of HP is called a shield. The shield has the same value as HP, but it automatically recovers after 3 seconds of not taking damage.
CC
Representative CC Heroes | |
---|---|
Ana Sleep Dart |
Mei Blizzard (ULT) |
CC refers to abilities that hinder actions, such as stun or knockback. It stands for Crowd Control, and in Overwatch 2, there are fewer heroes with CC compared to the original game.
Counter-pick
The act of selecting a hero that can gain an advantage against the enemy composition. It is an important concept in Overwatch to use heroes that have an advantage against the enemy and tilt the match in your favor.

Flanker
Flanker Characters | ||
---|---|---|
Genji |
Sombra |
Tracer |
Refers to characters with high mobility, such as for flanking and ambushing enemies. Rather than attacking together with allies, it requires movements to kill enemy supports and damage dealers from behind.
Projectile
Some Projectile Characters | ||
---|---|---|
Hanzo |
Orisa |
Pharah |
Refers to characters with projectile shots. Since it is not an instant hit like hitscan, it requires leading shots to hit moving enemies.
Main Healer
Main Healer | ||
---|---|---|
Ana |
Baptiste |
Moira |
Support characters with high burst healing. It is important to keep healing to prevent tanks from being eliminated and to prioritize staying alive.
Sub-healer
Main Healer | ||
---|---|---|
Zenyatta |
Brigitte |
Lucio |
A character that supports allies in ways other than healing, although their instantaneous healing output is lower than that of the Main Healer. They support allies by providing buffs and debuffs while the Main Healer focuses on healing tanks, for example, healing damage characters.
Recommended Support Characters and Strategies |
ULT
Abbreviation for Ultimate Ability. Due to the long formal name, it is commonly referred to as ULT among players.
DPS
"Damage per second," meaning the amount of damage dealt in one second. In Overwatch 2, it is also used as a term referring to the Damage Role.
Explanation of Composition Terms
Dive
A composition that focuses on high mobility tanks and other characters with high mobility to rush into the enemy's position. It aims to quickly dive into the backline, eliminate support and deal damage, specializing in creating a numerical advantage.
Poke
A composition that slowly advances by attacking the enemy from a medium to long range. Defensive characters act as shields while the ranged characters spread out and attack the enemy from multiple angles, gradually wearing them down.
Rush
A composition that increases movement speed and aims to quickly eliminate enemies in close combat. It mainly consists of characters that increase movement speed or excel in close-range combat, specializing in deciding the outcome of the battle in an instant.

Explanation of Tactical Terms
Spam
Spam Character | ||
---|---|---|
Hanzo |
Genji |
Torbjörn |
An act of constantly attacking to keep the enemy from showing their face at progression routes or building entrances. Characters that can deal effective damage at medium to long range or characters with high single-hit damage are suitable for this tactic.
Focus
A strategy where allies concentrate their firepower on a single enemy to defeat them. Solo Kills can greatly influence the battle in Overwatch, making it a fundamental yet important tactic.
Meta
Refers to the act of exploiting weaknesses or taking countermeasures against the enemy. Anti-picks against specific characters are called "meta characters," and compositions that are effective against the enemy's composition are called "meta compositions."
Stagger
A delaying tactic where the enemy who has been defeated in a confrontation is intentionally not finished off and is killed after a certain amount of time has passed. In Overwatch, since all teammates must work together to defeat the enemy, it may be necessary to wait for the revival of a character who was killed late, which ultimately reduces the enemy's time.
Regroup
Refers to the act of regrouping. Since all teammates must be together to confront the enemy, regrouping is a fundamental yet crucial tactic.
Bait
A tactic of deliberately acting as a decoy to lure the enemy. The goal is to lure the enemy to the decoy, create a situation where one person is left on the front line, and then defeat the isolated enemy with concentrated firepower from allies.
Counter ULT
A tactic of using an effective ultimate ability to mitigate the damage from the enemy's ultimate ability. For example, Lucio's "Sound Barrier" or Zenyatta's "Transcendence" are considered counter ultimates against Zarya's "Graviton Surge".
C9
Refers to the situation where the base or payload is captured and defeated due to being too engrossed in battles on the front line. The origin of this term comes from the professional team "Cloud9" being so engrossed in battles that they lost points three times in a single match.
Carry
Used to describe a character who has made significant contributions to leading the team to victory in a match. It is used when someone has "carried" the team with actions such as getting a team kill with their ultimate ability or achieving consecutive kills with headshots.
Choke Point
Refers to narrow points in progression paths such as gates. It is common for enemies and allies to confront each other and battle at choke points on the front line.
Glossary
Troll
Used to refer to players who cause trouble for others during a match. They are said to be giving the enemy an advantage by not changing characters even when they are being countered, or repeatedly rushing in alone and getting defeated, even in a losing match.
Mirror
Refers to a match where the compositions of both teams are the same. It is also used when competing against an opponent who has the same character.
Team kill
The act of eliminating all enemies. When all enemies are defeated and waiting to respawn, the game will report "Team kill".
Environmental kill
Refers to a kill where the enemy is pushed off the map, similar to a "falling death" in other games. If you deal damage to the enemy before they fall, it is considered an environmental kill.
