Competitive Play in Overwatch 2 is divided into 8 rank tiers, collectively known as Skill Tiers. Players are not initially assigned a Skill Tier and only receive it after completing 7 wins or 20 losses in placement matches.

Top 500 Rankings After 2 Weeks

Top 500 rankings become available 2 weeks after the start of the season. Players can view separate rankings for each input pool when playing across multiple platforms.

Each Skill Tier is further divided into five Divisions, with Division 5 being the lowest. Division numbers decrease as the skill level increases.

Skill Tier Progression

Ranking up from Division 1 advances players to Division 5 of the next Skill Tier. Conversely, ranking down from Division 5 sends players back to Division 1 of the previous Skill Tier.

Rank Determination: 7 Wins or 20 Losses

7 Wins

In Overwatch 2, rank is determined by achieving either 7 wins or enduring 20 losses. Match evaluations within the system also influence rank determination, so even with the same number of wins or losses, ranks may vary.

How to Increase Rank

Role-Specific Ranks

Skill Tier _Tank Skill Tier _Damage Skill Tier _Support

Ranks are established separately for each role in Overwatch 2. One role's rank does not impact another, allowing players to explore Competitive Play with different roles during longer queue times.

Random Game Mode Selection

Game mode

Competitive Play features random game mode selection from "Hybrid," "Escort," "Control," and "Push." Unlike Quick Play, it adopts a multiple-round format, with the team earning more points emerging as the winner.

Unlocking Competitive Play

Rank locked

Starting from Overwatch 2, Competitive Play is not immediately available. It can be unlocked by completing challenges.

Unlocked for OW1 Players

For those who played Overwatch, Competitive Play is accessible from the beginning, though returning players may need to adjust to potential rank differences.

How to Increase Your Rank

Improve Your Win Rate

Victory

Tips to improve your win rate
Stick with your teammates unless you're playing a flanker character.
When your HP is low, stay close to support characters for healing.
Learn the abilities and characteristics of each character.
Switch characters according to the enemy team composition.
Familiarize yourself with map terrain such as drop locations and high ground.

It goes without saying that increasing your win rate leads to a higher rank. If you can play in a way that allows you to retreat and recover when your HP is low, or switch to a character that is effective against the enemy, you will have a better chance of winning.

Increasing Evaluation

Evaluation

Factors that are likely to increase evaluation
K/D Ratio (applies to all characters)
Damage Dealt (mainly for Damage Role)
Healing Done (mainly for Support Role)
Damage Mitigated (mainly for Tank Role)

K/D Ratio (applies to all characters)

K/D Ratio refers to the Kill/Death ratio, where a higher number indicates a higher evaluation. To increase the number, it is necessary to decrease the number of deaths while increasing the number of kills. This requires strategic gameplay that aligns with the team members and is considered a challenging aspect.

Damage Dealt (mainly for Damage Role)

Damage Dealt is mainly relevant to the Damage Role, where dealing more damage than the enemy leads to a higher evaluation. However, it is important to prioritize the team's victory, so it is not advisable to engage in reckless actions just to increase damage and inconvenience teammates.

Healing Done (mainly for Support Role)

Healing Done is mainly relevant to the Support Role, where healing more than the enemy's support characters leads to a higher evaluation. However, the amount of healing is influenced by the total damage received by teammates and the number of deaths, so it is also speculated that Sub-healers like Zenyatta or Lucio, who can easily obtain assist evaluations, have an advantage.

Damage Mitigated (mainly for Tank Role)

Damage Mitigated is mainly relevant to the Tank Role, where having a higher Damage Mitigated value on the scoreboard compared to the enemy tank characters leads to a higher evaluation. The key points are how long you can stay on the frontlines and how well you can receive support from support characters' healing.

How to Check Your Rank

Check on the Competitive Play Screen

Competitive Play Screen

One way to check your rank is to do it on the Competitive Play screen. The current Skill Tier mark and Division number will be displayed, but they are small and difficult to see.

Check on the Career Overview Screen

The second way to check your rank is to do it on the Career Overview screen. It is also small and difficult to see like the Competitive Play screen, but you can see the number of match victories. If you haven't lost 20 matches, you can calculate the number of victories needed to reach the next rank by multiples of 7.

When playing Competitive Play with friends, be aware of the rank difference. Each rank has restrictions on partying with friends, and you cannot play multiplayer with people who are in significantly different rank ranges.

Different Pool in Console Version Causes Assist to Disappear

When playing Overwatch 2 on console and forming a party with friends on the PC version, the matchmaking pool will become PC. In the PC pool, the unique Aim Assist feature of the console version will be disabled, making it potentially feel more challenging than usual.
