Hogwarts Legacy: Recommended Brooms and How to Ride Them
- Last updated on
This article provides information about Brooms in Hogwarts Legacy. It covers how to ride a broom (controls), how to obtain and upgrade brooms, and many more!
Tips for Riding and Controlling a Broomstick
Controls | Actions |
---|---|
Hold L1, then press ◯ | Mount the broomstick |
Right Stick | Change view and ascend/descend |
Left Stick | Move forward, left, and right |
R2 | Accelerate |
Hold L2 | Consumes gauge for Speed Boost |
Hold ◯ | Land and dismount from the broomstick |
Mounting the Broomstick by Holding L1
After purchasing a broom, you can use it by holding the L1 button and then pressing the ◯ button. If you don't have a broomstick, progress through the main story until the Flying Class quest and purchase one at Sprintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade.
Riding the Broomstick is prohibited in restricted areas like Hogsmeade
You cannot ride the broomstick in certain areas such as dungeons and Hogsmeade. There may also be restrictions on riding the broomstick in narrow areas or being unable to land on cliffs. Make sure to understand where you can and cannot use the broom.

Accelerate by Holding R2
While moving on the broom, you can move faster by holding R2 and inputting the directional keys. There is no gauge consumption, so if you want to shorten your travel time, make it a habit to press R2 while moving on the broom.
Speed Boost by Holding L2 (Consumes Gauge)
In addition to accelerating with R2, you can move even faster by pressing and holding L2. Speed Boost consumes the gauge displayed in the bottom right of the screen. However, if you are at a low altitude and close to the ground, the gauge will not be consumed. So, if you want to dash long distances with L2, lower your altitude.
Use the Left Stick for Horizontal Movement
Use the left stick for horizontal movement. Since the left stick cannot control vertical movement, it is essential to coordinate with the right stick for full control.
The right stick is used for camera movement and vertical movement
When riding a broom, use the right stick for camera movement and vertical movement. For those who find camera control difficult, it is recommended to use only the left stick for horizontal movement and only the right stick for vertical movement. Once you get used to it, you can also incorporate camera control with the right stick.
Broom Upgrade Methods
Progress the Side Quests from Mr. Weekes
Upgrade Stage | Upgrade Requirement |
---|---|
Stage 1 | 1,000 Galleon Upgrade during the progress of "Sweeping the Competition" |
Stage 2 | 4,000 Galleon Upgrade during the progress of "The Sky is the Limit" |
Stage 3 | 7,500 Galleon Upgrade by reading the owl post that arrives through Post-Game Quests and the passage of time in "The Sky is the Limit" |
By progressing the side quest by Mr. Weekes, you can upgrade your broom up to the third stage. Upgrading requires a large amount of Galleon, so it's recommended to earn money through treasure chests and selling magical creatures.
Enhanced Speed and Reduced Gauge Consumption at High Altitudes
Comparison of Altitudes with Minimal Gauge Consumption | |
---|---|
Lower altitude than the left greenhouse before upgrade | Higher altitude than the left greenhouse after upgrade |
Upgrading the broom enhances its acceleration and speed in stages, and reduces the gauge consumption at higher altitudes. It is more convenient to use the upgraded broom for searching, so prioritize clearing the quests once they are unlocked.

How to Choose a Broom
Choose Based on Appearance
While some broom descriptions may mention acceleration and other factors, there is no difference in performance in terms of actual gameplay. Therefore, choose based on your personal preference for appearance. You can change the appearance of your broom from the broom slot on the right side of the equipment screen.

Tips for Winning the Broom Race Challenge
Winning the Broom Race Challenge |
---|
Pass through the rings as much as possible |
Make large directional changes and then make fine adjustments |
Hit the magic bubbles to increase speed |
Pass through the rings as much as possible
During the broom race, if you cannot pass through a ring, a penalty of 3 seconds will be added to your time. You can still clear the quest even if you missed a few rings. However, it will be difficult to achieve first place in "Sweeping the Competition" if you can't pass through all the rings. Pass through the rings as much as possible!
Make large directional changes and then make fine adjustments
The broom has its quirks in handling, so it's difficult to move as intended if you try to operate it like walking. Use the right stick to keep the next ring in the center of the screen and make fine adjustments with the left stick to touch the acceleration bubbles or pass through the rings.
Hit the magic bubbles to increase the speed
In the broom race, touching the bubbles between the rings will restore stamina and increase speed. To achieve "Sweeping the Competition," it is important to be able to touch at least one bubble between each ring, so always be aware of the position of the next ring and bubble to determine your route.
